Total Ankle Replacement

As with other joint replacement surgeries, during an ankle replacement, our orthopedic surgeons will use minimally invasive approaches to replace the ends of the damaged bones in your ankle joint.

Ankle replacement is one of the most reliable treatment options for improving function, reducing pain, and getting patients back to the things they love.

What Happens During an Ankle Replacement?

First, your surgeon will remove the damaged portions of your shinbone and talus.

Next, a new metal joint will be attached to the remaining bones. Your surgeon will use a special type of cement to hold everything in place. He or she may also insert a piece of plastic to ensure the joint can glide easily.

Then, the surgeon will make any other necessary repairs and surgically close the layers of muscle and skin around your ankle and foot.
