Cancer Services Program
Serving Genesee, Orleans, Wyoming and Niagara Counties
The Rochester Regional Health Cancer Services Program is a New York State Department of Health grant-funded initiative that provides breast, cervical and colorectal cancer screenings at no cost to eligible men and women throughout Genesee, Orleans, Wyoming and Niagara Counties.
Why should I be screened?
Screening tests can find breast, cervical and colorectal before they cause symptoms. Screening tests may find these cancers early when they are easiest to treat. Cervical and colorectal screening tests can even prevent cancer.
- The risk for breast cancer increases with age. It is most common in women ages 50 and older. A mammogram is the best way to find breast cancer early. Talk to your doctor about when and how often you should be screened.
- All men and women should be screened for colorectal cancer. Some people may be at higher risk for colorectal cancer. Talk to your doctor about your family history and other risk factors to decide when to be screened. Screening tests can find colorectal cancer early or may prevent cancer all together.
- All women are at risk for cervical cancer. Women over the age of 30 are more likely to get cervical cancer. Cervical cancer is the easiest gynecologic cancer to prevent with regular screening test and follow-up. It also is highly curable when found and treated early.
Our Services
We focus on providing cancer screening services that are essential for early detection and prevention of common cancers. If a screening test is abnormal, we provide diagnostic testing to find out if it is cancer. If cancer is found, we help our patient’s access treatment.
We offer the following screening services:
- Breast Cancer Screening: We use mammography and clinical breast exams to check a woman’s breasts for cancer. Services are offered to eligible women age 40 and older or those under 40 who are at high-risk or symptomatic for breast cancer.
- Cervical Cancer Screening: A Pap smear is the most commonly used test for finding cervical cancer early. Pap smears are done in a doctor’s office and are used to collect a sample from a woman’s cervix. The sample is sent to the lab for testing. We can also provide HPV testing. HPV is the virus that causes most cervical cancers. Screenings are offered to eligible women age 40 and older.
- Colorectal Cancer Screening: Our program can provide an at-home stool test called a FIT kit or a colonoscopy. The FIT kit is offered to eligible people age 45 and older who are at average risk for colorectal cancer. FIT kits are done at home and mailed to a lab in a pre-paid envelope. Colonoscopies are offered to eligible people ages 45 and older who are high risk for colorectal cancer, who have symptoms, or who have an abnormal FIT test. Colorectal cancer screening may begin younger if there is a family or personal history.
