Baker-Cederberg at a Glance

horseandbuggyFor over half a century, the Baker-Cederberg Museum and Archives has served as the repository of Rochester General's rich heritage. Its collections include minute books of Rochester General's various boards from 1847 to present, scrapbooks, uniforms, memorabilia, and a 22,000-image photo collection. (The Archives collection reflects the hospital's 150-year growth from the first board meeting to the present.)

The Museum and Archives also houses several special collections, including:

  • Rochester General Hospital School of Nursing Alumni Collection, 1880-1964
  • Base Hospital 19 (World War I), 1917-19
  • 19th General Hospital (World War II), 1942-45
  • Marion B. Baker Collection of period dioramas, 1930-50

The Baker-Cederberg Museum and Archives is a repository for several related collections:

  • Florence Nightingale Post, American Legion, 1919-present
  • John D. States, MD Automotive Safety Collection
  • Emergency Medical Service Collection
  • The Valenti Collection of Early AIDS Imprints

  • The Behavioral Health Network Collection

The Baker-Cederberg Archives was established in 1947 for the hospital's centennial, and was named in honor of Marion Bradley Baker and George Cederberg, who saw the value of Preserving Rochester General's past.

Reflecting a broader scope, The Baker-Cederberg Archives became The Baker-Cederberg Museum and Archives in 1984. The Museum and Archives offers 6,000 square feet of climate-controlled space which meets professional archival preservation standards. Its collections are managed by a professional curator and archivist, aided by trained volunteers.

The Baker-Cederberg Museum and Archives enjoys local and national recognition of its efforts. It received the New York State Archives and Records Administration's Annual Archives Week Award in 1996, and in 1994 received the Award of Merit from the Western New York Association of Historical Agencies. The Archives also received a Certificate of Commendation from the American Association for State and Local History.

The Baker-Cederberg Museum and Archives Programs

  • Exhibits - Two permanent exhibits located on the hospital concourse, twenty-one semi-permanent exhibits in the main gallery at Carlson Park and traveling exhibits throughout the community.
  • Oral history - videotaping prominent members of the hospital community. Personal histories have been recorded and transcribed, covering 1919 to the present.
  • Publications - including a semi-annual newsletter, The Baker-Cederberg Notebook, occasional monographs on the hospital's history and the 1997 photo history of the hospital -- To Serve the Community.
  • Research Assistance - offered to scholars, students and those interested in the history of area medical institutions.
  • Century of Service Award - presented annually to departments and families that have served the hospital for 100 years.
