In 1989, a group of individuals from Bioscience and Health Careers at Benjamin Franklin High School and Rochester General Hospital came together with a vision to give high school students in the Rochester City School District the opportunity to gain real life work experience in healthcare.
Over three decades later, students from city schools continue to seize the opportunity to work side-by-side with the healthcare professionals at Rochester Regional Health through a ten-month comprehensive paid internship. Schools currently participating in the program include:
- Rochester City School District schools
- Eugenio Maria de Hostos Charter School
- Rochester Prep Charter School
- University Prep Charter School for Young Men (UPrep)
- Urban-Suburban Interdistrict Transfer Program Students
For the last 10 years, 100% of the students who complete the Youth Apprentice program graduated high school and have been accepted into college. Around 65% of the students who graduate from the Youth Apprentice Program go on to pursue careers in health care or health-related fields.
Beyond gaining work experience, YAP students receive mentoring, excel in academics, and are encouraged to volunteer. Their experience is enriched by learning from a variety of experts who teach everything from money management to starting a career in surgery.
The Youth Apprentice Program students are the future of health care. Please consider funding the future of health care.
