POTSDAM, NY – Canton-Potsdam Hospital has been re-verified as a Level III Trauma Center by the Verification Review Committee of the American College of Surgeons. This achievement recognizes the Trauma Center's dedication to providing optimal care for injured patients in the North Country.
The American College of Surgeons first designated Canton-Potsdam Hospital (CPH) as a Level III Trauma Center in August 2018. The Hospital continues to be the only Level III Trauma Center north of the New York State Thruway in the Central New York region.
“Maintaining a verified Level III Trauma Center demonstrates our continued commitment to providing high quality trauma care to our community members close to home. This verification is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the staff at Canton-Potsdam Hospital,” stated CPH Trauma Program Manager James Barr.
CPH is fully equipped to provide rapid trauma care to adults, and the trauma team is fully trained for scenarios including severe car and motorcycle accidents, gunshot wounds, stab wounds, traumatic brain injury, burns, and falls. The Hospital provides 24-hour coverage by emergency medicine physicians, on-call surgeons and anesthetists, and provides continuing education for the trauma team.
CPH and St. Lawrence Health President Donna McGregor echoed Mr. Barr’s comment about the dedication put forth by CPH staff members.
“Receiving re-verification status as a Level III Trauma Center is proof of the exemplary devotion and commitment our Canton-Potsdam Hospital team has to assure our community members can receive the care they need when facing a health crisis,” Mrs. McGregor said.
Verified trauma centers must meet the essential criteria that ensure trauma care capability and institutional performance, as outlined by the American College of Surgeons' Committee on Trauma.
