Medical Staff

Your physician is a member of a carefully chosen, qualified Medical Staff. They supervise the selection of diagnostic tests, medications and courses of treatment. Your physician has the primary responsibility for your care. At times, your physician may consult with colleagues on the hospital staff to plan your treatment. Your care is planned and provided by a team consisting of your physician, professional registered nurse, licensed clinical pharmacist, registered therapists and technologists.

During your stay, you may be cared for by a Hospitalist. A Hospitalist is a board certified physician who specializes in the care of the hospitalized patient. They generally do not have private practices, so they concentrate their practice on the care of hospitalized patients.  You may see a few different Hospitalists during your stay. They work closely with each other and your community based doctor to provide round the clock physician care. Hospitalists are available at any time to answer questions from you or your family. They also serve as important members of our Rapid Response Team.

Nursing Staff

Registered nurses, many with post graduate training and certification, supervise the team that provides your nursing care. Included in the Department of Nursing are RNs, LPNs (Licensed Practical Nurses) and Nurses Aides. Our nurses are knowledgeable and concerned about your healthcare. They are prepared to meet your changing needs and help you to resume your health management when possible.

To help you to clearly identify your caregiver, our nursing team adopted a dress code policy that indicates their role in your care. All RNs wear solid navy blue or white. They may also wear a combination of the two colors. LPNs don solid burgundy or white or a combination of the two. Nurses Aides wear light blue. All employees, both clinical and non-clinical are required to wear photo identification.

Social Work

The Social Work Department at Rochester Regional Health is here to help you, your family and friends cope with the effects of illness. Please ask your nurse for assistance in contacting our social work experts.

Our social work offices are typically open Monday through Friday from 8:00 am - 4:30 pm.

Therapists

Therapists are educated in specific healthcare fields and may assist in your treatment at Rochester Regional Health hospitals. These fields include Physical and Occupational Therapy and Respiratory Therapy.

Technicians/Technologists

These healthcare specialists assist in your care by administering diagnostic tests, taking X-rays, drawing blood samples, etc. Their positions are included in the Departments of Radiology, Laboratory, and Diagnostic Cardiology. A technician may come to your room to perform these services or you may be transported to another area of the hospital for the procedure to be done.

Technicians wear solid or printed uniform tops with black pants.

Environmental Services Technician

Environmental Services Technicians prepare your room and clean it daily with as little inconvenience to you as possible.

Dieticians/Diet Technicians/Diet Aides

Dieticians are qualified registered professionals who supervise your nutritional requirements and advise you about your diet. Dietary technicians and aids assist in planning, selection and delivery of your carefully prepared meals.

Pharmacists

The Hospital Pharmacy is staffed by qualified pharmacists responsible for seeing that all needed medications are available to patients during their stay. Our clinical pharmacists are experts in the therapeutic use of medications. They routinely provide medication therapy evaluations and recommendations to patients and other health care professionals. Clinical pharmacists are a primary source of scientifically valid information and advice regarding the safe, appropriate, and cost-effective use of medications.

Discharge Planners

Discharge Planners will work with you and your family to make sure all of your discharge planning needs are complete and in place before you leave the hospital. We want to assure you will receive the necessary follow up care and that your discharge is safe. They assist the patient and his family with personal or environmental problems that may interfere with medical care and may refer you to community agencies to assist you with specific needs.

Volunteers

In addition to paid employees, you will see a hard working group of women, men, and young adults; the volunteers who give their time and talents to help you. Some of their services include mail delivery, Snack and Gift Shop staffing, department aides and assistance at special functions. Our volunteers provide thousands of hours of service annually at no cost to you or the hospital.

If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, please call the Volunteer Coordinator at (585) 344-7465.

Student Nurses

United Memorial is proud to offer clinical training to the nursing students from Genesee Community College. They are a valuable asset to our hospital. Students from the Board of Cooperative Education (BOCES) Nursing Assistant program also receive a portion of their education at United Memorial.

During the academic calendar, other colleges in the area may send students for their clinical experience in health related fields.

Ancillary Personnel

Behind the scenes, many employees are serving you indirectly in the Medical Records Department, Business Office, Purchasing and Storeroom, Central Supply, Medical Library, Facilities Management and Administration. There is a minimum of five employees per patient serving you in your time of need.

Ethics Consultation Service

Unity’s Ethics Consultation Service is available to help when patients, families or their providers encounter ethical dilemmas during the course of medical care. Ethical dilemmas arise when patients, families and providers are trying to make difficult decisions for which there is no one “right” or “wrong” choice. A team, made up of members of Unity’s Ethics Committee, conducts the consultations. The committee members include physicians and resident physicians, nurses, social workers, nutritionists, spiritual care and health law attorneys who have a special interest in ethics.
