Postpartum depression
After giving birth, you may experience dramatic mood swings, sadness and crying spells that can last for days at a time. Known as the “baby blues" this emotional roller coaster affects 70 percent to 85 percent of new moms.
If symptoms last more than two weeks, it could be a sign that you have postpartum depression (PPD). This condition is caused by a variety of physical, biochemical, and hormonal factors. You should discuss your symptoms with your physician.
Common risk factors for postpartum depression include:
- A history of severe Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS)
- Thyroid illnesses, such as hypothyroidism
- A personal or family history of depression
Warning signs for postpartum depression include:
- Changes in appetite
- Crying spells
- Fear of being alone
- Feelings of guilt, sadness or anger
- Forgetfulness or difficulty concentrating
- Lack of interest in your baby and other things you normally enjoy
- Severe insomnia
- Withdrawal and wanting to be alone
If you experience postpartum depression, call your physician to discuss a treatment plan.
