Postpartum depression

After giving birth, you may experience dramatic mood swings, sadness and crying spells that can last for days at a time. Known as the “baby blues" this emotional roller coaster affects 70 percent to 85 percent of new moms.

If symptoms last more than two weeks, it could be a sign that you have postpartum depression (PPD)This condition is caused by a variety of physical, biochemical, and hormonal factors. You should discuss your symptoms with your physician.

  • Changes in appetite
  • Crying spells
  • Fear of being alone
  • Feelings of guilt, sadness or anger
  • Forgetfulness or difficulty concentrating
  • Lack of interest in your baby and other things you normally enjoy
  • Severe insomnia
  • Withdrawal and wanting to be alone
